In this paper, we focus on some misconceptions about Critical Pragmatics, what it is, what it assumes and what it proposes. Doubtless, some of these misconceptions are due to clumsy writing on our part; perhaps others are due to inattentive reading. And some may be due to an effort to shield us from the apparent implausibility of what we said—and in fact meant. It does not matter much. We focus on those misunderstandings that most matter to us, either because, by (...) repetition, they have ended up being annoying, even if they are not, perhaps, that important; or because they are substantial enough to represent a distortion of the basic picture of Critical Pragmatics and its theoretical foundations, namely, Critical Referentialism—also known as the Reflexive-referential Theory—and, more generally, Perry’s fundamental views on meaning and content(s). Singular terms without referents are called empty or vacuous terms. But not all of them are equally empty. In particular, not all proper names that fail to name an existing object fail in the same way: although they are all empty, they are not all equally vacuous. “Vulcan,” “Jacob Horn,” “Odysseus,” and “Sherlock Holmes,” for instance, are all empty. They have no referents. But they are not entirely vacuous or useless. Sometimes they are used in statements that are true or (...) false. We are basically referentialists about proper names. The ordinary semantic function of a proper name is to refer to an object, and to do it directly, that is, without semantically providing any identifying condition that the object should meet to be the referent. To put it differently, we agree that statements containing proper names express singular propositions, i.e., that their truth-conditions involve the referent of the proper name, if it exists, and not any identifying condition of it. Now, since empty names lack a referent, and therefore would not express such a singular proposition, how do we explain that many, if not all, statements containing them have a truth-value? Answering this question for the case of fictional names, in particular, is the aim of this paper. (shrink)

Prestamos especial atención al papel de las circunstancias como contenido conceptual de las oraciones en Begriffsschrift y argumentamos que ninguna razón de las que ofrece Frege en “Über Sinn und Bedeutung” para establecer los valores de verdad como referencia de las oraciones justifica su eliminación. This paper addresses the two interpretations that a combination ofnegative indefinites can get in concord languages like French:a concord reading, which amounts to a single negation, and a doublenegation reading. We develop an analysis within a polyadic framework,where a sequence of negative indefinites can be interpreted as aniteration of quantifiers or via resumption. The first option leadsto a scopal relation, interpreted as double negation. The secondoption leads to the construction of a polyadic negative quantifiercorresponding to the concord reading. Given that (...) sentential negationparticipates in negative concord, we develop an extension of thepolyadic approach which can deal with non-variable binding operators,treating the contribution of negation in a concord context assemantically empty. Our semantic analysis, incorporated into agrammatical analysis formulated in HPSG, crucially relies on theassumption that quantifiers can be combined in more than one wayupon retrieval from the quantifier store. The paper offers a semantic and pragmatic analysis of statements of the form ‘x is beautiful’ as involving a double speech act: first, a report that x is beautiful relative to the speaker’s aesthetic standard, along the lines of naive contextualism; second, the speaker’s recommendation that her audience comes to share her appraisal of x as beautiful. We suggest that attributions of beauty tend to convey such a recommendation due to the role that aesthetic practices play in fostering and enhancing (...) interpersonal coordination. Aesthetic practices are driven by a disposition towards the attunement of attitudes and aesthetic recommendations contribute to forwarding such attunement. Our view is motivated by an attempt to satisfy the following set of desiderata: to account for the experiential nature of aesthetic judgments, disagreements in aesthetic debates, and the normative aspirations of aesthetic discourse, as well as to avoid appealing to error theory and realist ontological commitments. To address the topic of children’s online aggression, this article explores a subsample from the EU Kids Online dataset of 1404 children, aged 9–16, who reported having engaged in aggressive acts online in the previous year. Through a cluster analysis, respondents were classified into three groups. Findings emphasize the risk factors for aggression and how they relate to age-specific developmental tasks. Boys predominate, but the gender gap is not as wide as in offline contexts. For almost half of the children, (...) aggression goes hand in hand with victimization. All the clusters share high levels of emotional deprivation. A sense of lacking social support, from both adults and peers, becomes more relevant among those children with high and more problematic engagement in online aggression. Results confirm that online aggression must be considered within the complex and fluid offline–online continuum cutting across the social contexts in which children grow. (shrink)

Além de atrativos turísticos, as celebrações religiosas no (...) país são também patrimônio imaterial e estão inseridas dentro da cultura "do festejar" dos brasileiros. Esse presente artigo tem por finalidade abordar aspectos da Procissão ao Nosso Senhor dos Passos na cidade sergipana de São Cristóvão. A metodologia utilizada foi a pesquisa bibliográfica, com discussão no campo teórico sobre Barroco, Festa Devocional, Tradição, Religiosidade, Procissão, Turismo Religioso, Cultura e Identidade. Também foi realizada a pesquisa de campo, com observação direta. Com esse estudo, ficou perceptível que, como território distante de Portugal, as festas religiosas do Brasil tomaram uma dinâmica própria, absorvendo elementos profanos e se resignificando através do apelo popular. These were the subject of harmony, but also of struggles and social control held by the Church and the Portuguese State. Currently in Brazil, the Catholic party moving a lot of people in the period of their events. Apart from tourist attractions, religious celebrations in the country are also intangible heritage and culture are embedded within "the feast" of Brazilians. This present article seeks to address aspects of the Procession of " Nosso Senhor dos Passos " the city of São Cristóvão state of Sergipe. The methodology used was literature, with discussion in the theoretical field of Baroque, Devotional Feast, Tradition, Religion, Procession, Religious Tourism, Culture and Identity. We also carried out field research, with direct observation.With this study, it was noticeable that, as distant territory of Portugal, the religious feasties in Brazil have taken a very dynamic, absorbing the profane elements and reframing through popular appeal. ABSTRACT:Although the literature on multi-stakeholder initiatives for sustainability has grown in recent years, it is scattered across several academic fields, making it hard to ascertain how individual disciplines, such as business ethics, can further contribute to the debate. Based on an extensive review of the literature on certification and principle-based MSIs for sustainability, we show that the scholarly debate rests on three broad themes : theinputinto creating and governing MSIs; theinstitutionalizationof MSIs; and theimpactthat relevant initiatives create. While our discussion reveals (...) the theoretical underpinnings of the 3Is, it also shows that a number of research challenges related to business ethics remain unaddressed. We unpack these challenges and suggest how scholars can utilize theoretical insights in business ethics to push the boundaries of the field. A common assumption in the study of philosophy is the existence of a list of thinkers, texts and classic topics which would contains the fundamental highlights in the history of philosophical thinking. This list has been called “canon” and is very often characterized by its model character. In connection with it, there is a number of interesting and deeply philosophical questions: i) Is there really a philosophical canon? ii) If there is: what is its function? How is it configured? Is (...) it stable? iii) What are the requirements that a text or an author must satisfy in order to become a member of the canon and what are the criteria to select them? Are these criteria ideologically oriented or they rather respect the values of originality, sublimity, depth and intrinsic representativeness to philosophy? iv) Is it essential to the study of philosophy the reference to a canon? We use this editorial essay as a call for a more effective use of new technologies, such as mobile apps and Web 2.0 tools, to educate students and other relevant stakeholders on business ethics, corporate social responsibility, and sustainability topics. We identify three overarching reasons that justify the need for new ways of teaching that further incorporate technology to foster the innovative thinking needed to tackle imminent societal grand challenges such as climate change and increasing inequality. First, we are facing (...) a new generation of millennials and Generation Z students who are digital natives and more likely to search for educational content on their electronic devices. Second, new technologies offer opportunities to reach students globally, helping to democratize education. Third, we posit that the intrinsic characteristics of societal grand challenges, which are complex, uncertain, and evaluative, can benefit from technology as an effective translator of multilayered concepts into more digestible action items. Our essay ends with a brief summary of the four essays included in the thematic symposium: “There is an App for that! The Use of New Technologies and Apps in Ethics, Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainability Education.”. (shrink)

A reflexao busca estabelecer um eixo de consideraçao sobre a realidade do nordeste brasileiro com as perspectivas da epistemologia da Terapia Comunitaria criada pelo professor e médico psiquiatra Adalberto Barreto, e consideraçoes da pedagogia de Paulo Freire a fim de exercer o cuidado em saude mental para (...) pessoas expostas a extremas violências de ordem étnica, cultural, psiquica, econômica, social e moral. O relato revela que os conhecimentos e experiência brasileira estao sendo aprofundados e desenvolvidos por profissionais da saude mental no contexto francês através da clinica da antropologia médica, junto ao Polo de Pesquisa Médica Psicologica Associaçao Minkoviska em Paris com apoio do Ministerio da Saude da França. El presente volumen está dedicado a la reflexión filosófica inter-cultural y, por ello, con nombre propio, a Raúl Fornet-Betancourt, figura prominente en este ámbito del pensar contemporáneo en Latinoamérica, El Caribe y Europa. Es en gran parte gracias al Prof. Fornet-Betancourt que la voz de los pueblos hispanohablantes de América es escuchada actualmente como expresión de un modo de pensar propio que, sin abandonar el profundo y amplio conocimiento de la tradición, asume nuevas problemáticas y objetos de reflexión, como también (...) permanentes y antiguos dilemas de la existencia hu-mana, desde una perspectiva de diálogo entre culturas. Esta perspec-tiva, abierta a la sensibilidad creativa de la rica mixtura afrodescen-diente, indígena y europea que configura el amplio ethos espiritual de Centroamérica, el Caribe y América Latina, habla al mundo desde lo propio que no se encierra en sus límites, sino que, por el contrario, se atreve en igualdad de condiciones a entrar en diálogo con otras culturas en torno a lo sido del mundo, del hoy que nos compete y de lo que adviene desde ya en el presente. Este es el legado que ya desde hace algunos años construye el Prof. Fornet-Betancourt, y que sirve de marco de referencia a la mayoría de artículos que conforman este número especial de nuestra revista en su honor. RESUMO O presente artigo parte de várias considerações de Bakhtin a respeito do discurso romanesco a fim de compreender alguns aspectos discursivos do Dom Quixote, de Miguel de Cervantes. Procede-se, então, a uma comparação com o discurso de outra obra que reproduz parcialmente o Dom Quixote: o conto Pierre Menard, autor do Quixote, de Jorge Luis Borges. Por fim, discute-se brevemente o problema da quase ausência do Dom Quixote nas discussões de Bakhtin sobre o romance, apresentando-se a hipótese de Walter (...) Reed de que, tal como no conto de Borges, a própria teoria bakhtiniana também reproduz parcialmente o peculiar pensamento do Quixote. ABSTRACT This article discusses several of Bakhtin’s concepts regarding discourse in the novel genre as a way to understand some discursive aspects of Miguel de Cervantes’ Dom Quixote. We then proceed to a comparison with the discourse in another literary work that partially reproduces Dom Quixote: the short story “Pierre Menard, Author of the Quixote,” by Jorge Luis Borges. Finally, we briefly discuss the problem of Dom Quixote’s almost absence in Bakhtin’s work about the novel genre, while presenting the hypothesis by Walter Reed that, as in Borges’ short story, Bakhtin’s theory itself also partially reproduces the Quixote’s particular way of thinking. Por meio de três princípios da e para a docência, produzimos um diálogo articulado entre as premissas mais gerais a respeito do trabalho docente e as reflexões originadas da experiência cotidiana como professores formadores. Through three principles of and for teaching, we produced an articulated dialogue between the most general premises regarding teaching work and the reflections originated from the daily experience as teacher educators. In the end, we hope to highlight the complexity of the profession that is both profession and calling. Este estudo investiga a influência dos algoritmos e sistemas automatizados sobre a esfera pública e a deliberação democrática, analisando como essas tecnologias impactam a racionalidade comunicativa proposta por Jürgen Habermas. A personalização algorítmica e a opacidade nos critérios de decisão informacional criam vários fenômenos, intensificando a polarização da opinião pública e comprometendo a qualidade do debate democrático. A pesquisa revela que, enquanto os algoritmos moldam a participação cívica e a formação da opinião, eles também apresentam desafios significativos para a teoria (...) habermasiana, que precisa ser revisada para incorporar as complexidades da mediação digital contemporânea. O estudo sugere que futuras pesquisas devem explorar regulamentações algorítmicas, educação para a cidadania digital e novas abordagens teóricas para promover uma deliberação pública mais inclusiva e eficaz. Este texto vai explanar as diversas contribuições que as obras cinematográficas podem propiciar para a educação, ferramenta essa que pode ser uma grande aliada dos docentes em sala de aula, visto que os filmes chamam a atenção dos aprendentes, diante da transtextualidade e uso de recursos estéticos que dialogam com outras expressões artísticas, além das refrações histórico-sociais possíveis. Nessa perspectiva, compartilhamos algumas experiências didáticas oriundas do projeto “Cine-CAVN: Recepção crítica da indústria cultural na formação da leitura, da escrita e no (...) letramento midiático”, realizado na UFPB / Campus III. Tal demanda institucional surge da necessidade formativa do sujeito crítico e atuante, utilizando como mediação o cinema, arte integrante da cultura da mídia, que auxilia os participantes na produção de textos, visto que a escrita ainda é um grande desafio para a maioria dos discentes. O objetivo das ações é analisar as obras fílmicas e potencializar nos participantes um olhar problematizador, por meio de textos escritos e/ou audiovisuais, trazendo como impacto social um cidadão emancipado (FREIRE, 1986). Assim como o mundo está em constante transformação, a escola também deve se adequar a algumas necessidades dos alunos, e trazer para a sala de aula ferramentas tecnológicas do seu cotidiano, propiciando, desta forma, novos olhares para os temas sensíveis e componentes curriculares (ocultos ou não), de forma a estimular a(s) habilidades(s) crítica(s) dos aprendentes. This paper presents an approach to the belief system based on a computational framework in three levels: first, the logic level with the definition of binary local rules, second, the arithmetic level with the definition of recursive functions and finally the behavioural level with the definition of a recursive construction pattern. Social communication is achieved when different beliefs are expressed, modified, propagated and shared through social nets. This approach is useful to mimic the belief system because the defined functions provide (...) different ways to process the same incoming information as well as a means to propagate it. Our model also provides a means to cross different beliefs so, any incoming information can be processed many times by the same or different functions as it occurs is social nets. (shrink)

Se examina la interpretación aristotélica del azar como causa accidental en el ámbito de los fines de aquello que puede ser realizado por la naturaleza o por el pensamiento. ¿Por qué un acontecimiento fortuito pertenece al orden de los fines? ¿Qué quiere decir que los sucesos fortuitos son “para algo” (ἓνεκά του)? Se repasan las principales respuestas de los especialistas, se indican algunas deficiencias y se propone una lectura no causal-explicativa de la expresión ἓνεκά του, diferente de la teleología del (...) como-si, como explicación de la finalidad del acontecimiento fortuito. The so-called uncontrolled donation after circulatory determination of death (uDCDD) have been implemented in several countries, including Spain and France, to increase the availability of organs for transplantation. These protocols allow obtaining kidneys, livers and lungs of patients who do not survive cardio-pulmonary resuscitation performed in out-of-hospital settings. Simultaneously with the development and recent proliferation of these protocols, some emergency teams have begun to employ unconventional methods of CPR, with still uncertain but promising results. The coexistence of these two possibilities (...) raises some questions: At what point should attempts to save a patient with circulatory arrest be abandoned so that this individual can begin to be considered as a potential organ donor? How to manage potential conflicts of loyalties that may arise within emergency and procurement teams? How should the information to the families of those patients and potential organ donors be managed? This article gathers the conclusions of a workshop in which an interdisciplinary working group addressed these and other questions related to DCDD and non-conventional CPR. (shrink)

In these short comments, I concentrate mostly on the discussion about belief retention, about Frege’s dilemma concerning sentences containing temporal indexical expressions and about the problems of cognitive significance it raises. I argue that Bozickovic’s interpretation of Perry’s proposals (both of the 70’s proposal and of its later developments) is not accurate. I offer an account of these problems that I take to be congenial with Perry’s own explanation and which I think might complement Bozickovic’s own proposal.

Human communication is often thought about in terms of transmitted messages in a conventional code like a language. But communication requires a specialized interactive intelligence. Senders have to be able to perform recipient design, while receivers need to be able to do intention recognition, knowing that recipient design has taken place. To study this interactive intelligence in the lab, we developed a new task that taps directly into the underlying abilities to communicate in the absence of a conventional code. We (...) show that subjects are remarkably successful communicators under these conditions, especially when senders get feedback from receivers. Signaling is accomplished by the manner in which an instrumental action is performed, such that instrumentally dysfunctional components of an action are used to convey communicative intentions. The findings have important implications for the nature of the human communicative infrastructure, and the task opens up a line of experimentation on human communication. (shrink)
